If You Want it to Sell, Give Your Home Curb Appeal

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

If you have ever driven through a neighborhood and seen one house which stood out from the rest, try to think back what it was that made it stand out.  Whatever that house had is what you want your house to have so you can sell it.  If you can, try to go back and find that house, and try to determine the reasons why it stands out from the rest.  Perhaps it is the very house that you are living in now.  Try to think at what it was that attracted you so much to the home the first time you pulled up to the curb.  If you want your home to sell, it has to have curb appeal.

If you want a definition of curb appeal, it is simply that elusive quality which makes your house stand out from the rest.  The house should welcome prospective buyers as they step out of the car rather than chase them away.  Your home should have an interesting, warm and inviting essence to it.  It should not look gaudy, flashy or extravagant, but it should have the right flashes of panache, style and beauty.

If you live in a house that is really shaded by trees, or if you live on a dark street that makes your house difficult to see at night, add some lights.  You can add some solar lights to the garden beds, a porch light or even a light on a post on the front of the property.  Lights will keep the home from looking gloomy and hidden, and they will add curb appeal.

Look at the entrance to your home and see if it is inviting.  You might even ask family or friends to be objective and tell you how the entrance to your home looks.  Interesting walkways leading to the house make the home feel approachable.  You can add colors to the landscaping and siding and you have added to that approachable feeling.

If you have a front porch, then you need to remodel it if it has seen better days.  What may seem cozy to you will look worn and out of date to others.  If you really want to go all out, then build a porch that extends across the whole front of the house.  If money is tight, perhaps some sandpaper, varnish and paint will do the trick.  Of course, you cannot forget hanging flower pots with lots of colorful flowers.

You might even pay a visit to your local flea market and look for those accents that will transform your home from mundane to unique.  Old, wrought iron gates can be painted and they can be used as vine trellises.  If you have one of those great, natural oak doors, replace the door knobs and perhaps even add a door knocker.  You can find some really attractive hardware at the flea market if you simply look around.  In essence, be imaginative, and you can go a long way toward creating a home that might sell much faster than you could have possible imagined.
